Playing Cards & The Winter Season - The Perfect Gift From Halloween to Christmas
Alex Haines
Tiger vs. Snake Vintage Playing Cards
There is something about the shortening of days and the drawing in of evenings that has always suited playing cards. Not the summer version of card games, played quickly on a garden table between other things, but the winter version: unhurried, firelit, the kind of game that lasts the whole evening and produces the kind of conversation that would never happen anywhere else. Playing cards have belonged to the winter season for as long as there have been winter evenings worth staying in for.
They are also, we would argue, the best gift the season has to offer - for collectors, for card players, for folklore enthusiasts, for the impossible-to-buy-for person in your life who already has everything a supermarket gift aisle can produce. This post is about why - and about what we make at A. Haines Playing Cards that earns a place under the tree, on the mantelpiece, or in the collection of someone who takes these things seriously.
Why Playing Cards & Winter Belong Together

Golden Eagle Gold Gilded Edition Playing Cards
The connection between playing cards and the darker half of the year is older than most people realise. In medieval and early modern Europe, card games were seasonal entertainment in the most literal sense - summer was for outdoor labour and leisure, winter was for the indoors, the fire, and the card table. The great British card makers of the 17th and 18th centuries produced their luxury editions precisely for the winter market: gilt-edged decks in ornate boxes, made for households where the long evenings needed filling with something both beautiful and enjoyable.
And Christmas? The Victorians, who gave us most of what we think of as Christmas tradition, were also the golden age of British playing card design. De La Rue and Goodall produced luxury Christmas gift editions every year - gilt-edged, elaborately boxed, sold through Harrods and other distinguished retailers. That tradition is what we work within at A. Haines, from our studio in Manchester, drawing everything by hand.
The Ace Of Spades: Meaning, Symbolism & Winter

Love & Retribution pt. 2 Playing Cards
No single card carries more winter symbolism than the Ace of Spades. The history of why it looks the way it does is one of the stranger stories in British legal history - playing cards were taxed in England from 1588, and from 1712 the Ace of Spades bore an official government stamp proving duty had been paid. By 1765 the stamp had become an elaborate design incorporating the royal coat of arms. Forging it carried the death penalty. The ornate Ace of Spades was embedded for over 200 years before stamp duty was abolished in 1960, and no manufacturer has ever abandoned it.
The spade suit itself has older associations still. Derived from the French word pique - a pike, the weapon of infantry - the spade accumulated connections with winter, death and the turning of the year through European folklore that predate the playing card entirely. The Ace of Spades has been a tax receipt, a maker's badge, a death card and a symbol of fate. It is the most historically loaded object in a deck of cards - and at A. Haines, every Ace of Spades is treated as such. Drawn by hand, with that history in mind.

British Playing Card Heritage: The Gift With A Story

Love & Retribution pt.1 Playing Cards
Part of what makes a premium deck of British playing cards such a considered gift is the heritage it carries. The English pattern court cards used in virtually every deck in the world today were developed and perfected by British manufacturers in the 19th century. Goodall's Camden Town works produced over two million packs a year. De La Rue, granted a Royal Letters Patent in 1831, became recognised as the inventor of the modern English playing card.
When you give someone such a gift, you are giving them an object that sits within that tradition - whether they know it or not. The court cards follow the visual grammar that Goodall and De La Rue established in Victorian London. The gilt edges connect directly to the luxury gift decks De La Rue produced for Harrods in the 1880s.
At A. Haines, that heritage is not background context. It is the active inspiration for everything we make, drawn by hand in Manchester, with that weight of history behind every stroke.

Halloween: Cards, Folklore & The Dark Season

Cryptids: Black Shuck & Mothman
Halloween and playing cards have more in common than most people consider. The Cryptids collection was made for exactly this audience: Black Shuck, the phantom hound of East Anglian folklore whose scorch marks are still visible on a Suffolk church door from 1577, and Mothman, the winged enigma of Point Pleasant whose thirteen months of sightings preceded the Silver Bridge disaster of 1967.
Both decks are hand-drawn throughout in a woodblock print style that suits their folkloric subject matter completely. The gilded editions - Black Shuck with black gilded edges, Mothman with deep red - are among the most distinctive Halloween gifts you could pick up this season. The Jokers from each deck form a diptych when placed side by side. Objects designed to be looked at as much as played with, and in the candlelit atmosphere of a Halloween evening, they look exactly right!

We call it the Dinks In Pink - Charlotte wraps our lightly damaged inventory (small crushed tuckbox corners or printing imperfections where the cards are still perfect or near perfect) in pink paper and they are sold as mystery decks - gilded and standard versions alike - until all are sold or the weekend concludes for another year. This year why not sign up to our newsletter to be notified when Dinks In Pink goes live?
