ALBATROSS NAUTICAL PLAYING CARDS
HISTORY
Released as a Kickstarter campaign in January 2025, Albatross Nautical Playing Cards was the project that catapulted our brand and our playing cards to a wider audience than ever before. The campaign raised over £27,000 with over 400 backers, and was our most successful and celebrated project so far. DESIGN
Choosing to take the artwork in a bolder and more fun direction than anything we had done before, while retaining our classic vintage style and hand-drawn vibes, the project revolved around the central theme of a short story in which the merchant sailing ship Albatross is lost at sea and becomes a fearful whisper, only seen on dark foggy nights, before returning to the darkness from whence it came... a colour palette heavily featuring a deep aqua green was chosen, complemented with bright reds and yellows, to remind of classic playing cards, but with a fun nautical twist.
THE COLLECTION
The decks tell a story, with Albatross No. 5 being a regular deck of playing cards, and Albatross No. 6 being the cursed, ghost-ship reflection - featuring ghostly skeleton court cards, muted washed-out colours, and a deep glossy black gilding to remind of the vastness of the ocean - the final resting place of the Albatross. We chose to create and release a stripped down workers' version of the deck too, featuring the same theme and artwork but in a magician-friendly package - no aging effects, no skeletons, no water stains - just a very clean, very standard and very functional deck of cards, perfect for everyday use.

I really like these cards. They have a nice, substantial feel, shuffle and deal easily. They come in a nice box—which is rare these days. Luv the court cards. Luv the proportions.
My only gripe, I wish the purple backs were a little deeper color. Not a real complaint as I would buy them again. All around— very nice! My compliments to A. Haines. A great set.

These cards came carefully packed in multiple layers of bubble wrap. Once opened it was clear that there was just as much, if not more love and care that went into the creation of these cards. They feel just like actual paper, but holds their shape extremely well even after countless shuffles. The designs of every court cards are beautiful and unique, not to mention the smooth vibrant colors on both the face and back of the cards. I’m very pleased with these cards!

I recently ordered some cards that did not arrive in the post as expected. I was able to fully explain the situation in which I felt listened to and provided with assurances that the issue would be looked into.
Alex maintained excellent communication throughout and the issue was resolved. Turns out the discrepancy was with Royal Mail and I now have my cards, which are in perfect condition.
I will definitely buy from Haines cards again :)

These are really great cards! I initially bought three setups because the overall design was so nice. But impressed by the high quality of the cards, I ordered more. The plastic is very high quality, and the textured surface is quite thick, giving them a really nice feel when handling them.
